COVID-19 Appointments & Office Protocols

COVID Protocols

We have officially RE-OPENED for routine eye care (starting April 27, 2020) and in-office vision therapy sessions (starting May 4, 2020)! We can’t tell you how happy we are to be able to return to what we are passionate about – caring for our patients! We have really missed you and want to thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

Our top priority remains the safety of our patients and our staff members.

Please review our new protocols in order to streamline your visit. The main protocols we have implemented to help reduce unnecessary contact, and maintain stringent cleaning protocols we are listed below:

SAFETY PROTOCOLS:

  • Masks: All doctors, staff, and patients will be required to wear masks. We ask all patients to wear their own masks.
  • Face shields: Most of our providers will be wearing face shields during patient care (examinations and vision therapy sessions). At this time face shields are not required for our staff to wear as it is not required by CDC or AOA. If you would prefer your provider to wear a face shield, please let your provider know and we will be happy to do so.
  • Virtual Check-In: Patients are asked to remain in their car and text 303-850-9499 with their name upon arrival. When we are ready for you to enter the building, we will text back instructions. (Note this is for primary care and optical patients only. Vision therapy patients are to text their specific therapist’s number.) This process will allow us to reduce the number of patients in the waiting room.
  • Online In-Take Forms: We ask that all patients complete our online intake forms prior to their appointment. Click here for the online intake forms.
  • Temperature Check: All doctors, staff, and patients will have their temperatures measured when entering the office. Any patient with a high temperature will be asked to reschedule. Any staff member with a high temperature will be sent home.
  • Screening: All patients and staff can expect to answer a few survey questions about their exposure to coronavirus. We ask that if you or members of your family are sick or have symptoms including: fever, cold, cough, shortness of breath, loss of smell, gastrointestinal concerns, or other flu like symptoms that you please stay home and reschedule your appointment. And as always, if one of our staff or their family member is sick or have symptoms they will be staying home.
  • Limited Examination Room Attendance: To reduce the amount of patients in the office, we ask that patients be seen alone. Patients under the age of 18 may have one parent or guardian to accompany them. (Special accommodations or circumstances will be addressed on a case by case basis.)

CLEANLINESS PROTOCOLS:

  • Cleaning: Increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols will be followed. All patient care areas will be thoroughly cleaned between patients. All common areas (such as door knobs, handles, light switches, etc.) will be disinfected through-out the day. All common use vision therapy equipment will be thoroughly cleaned between each patient.
  • Hand-washing: Patients will be asked to wash their hands prior to being seated in the examination room or starting vision therapy. Staff has increased hand washing and will at least wash their hands prior to each patient encounter. Hand sanitizer is placed through-out the office, please feel free to use as needed.
  • Social Distancing: Social distancing will be enforced with modified patient flow to ensure safety and the virtual check-in. Please observe 6 feet social distancing to the best of your ability while at the office. There will be brief procedures where we must be closer in order to complete portions of the eye examination or vision therapy activities.

In-office contact lens evaluations have resumed. Call our main phone to schedule your appointment today.

We are happy to continue “safe no-contact delivery” of your contact lenses with free shipping! OPTICAL DEPARTMENT (GLASSES)

Our optical is now operating by appointment only for patients not seen for an examination on the same day. To schedule an appointment (to shop and/or pick up your glasses) please call the optical department and speak to one of our opticians at (303) 850-0924.

VISION THERAPY/TRAINING & VISUAL REHABILITATION

We could not be more thrilled to return to in-office vision therapy sessions!

Our greatest priority continues to be your/your child’s safety and therefore taking all necessary steps. Our team has diligently worked to prepare the Vision Therapy department to abide by medical social distancing and cleaning recommendations. Please review the following protocols that are in addition to our full office protocols:

  • Waiting Room: Though we have updated the waiting room to adhere to social distancing recommendations and all chairs are being regularly cleaned, we are requesting that patients/parents do NOT wait in the waiting room. We recommend either waiting in your car or the atrium.
  • Virtual Check-In: Patients are asked to remain in their car and text their specific therapist’s number with their name upon arrival. When we are ready for you to enter the building, we will text back instructions. This process will allow us to reduce the amount of patients in the waiting room. If you do not receive a response from your therapist by 5 minutes after your session start time, we ask that you please knock on the therapy door to alert us.
  • Social distancing: Will be maintained during your/your child’s session. We have reconfigured the vision therapy room to allow for all therapist/patient duos to maintain at least 6 feet from one another. There will be brief procedures where we must be closer in order to complete vision therapy activities properly.
  • Cleaning: All shared equipment will of course be sterilized prior to and after each use.
  • Vision Therapy bags: Patients are encouraged to continue to bring their VT bags so that they can use their personal equipment rather than shared equipment. During the sessions, only the patient will touch the bag and its contents and there will be a clean area provided for each patient’s bag that will be disinfected after every use. Patients/parents are welcome and encouraged to switch or wash bags as they see necessary
  • End of Therapy Sessions: Therapy sessions will continue to be 45 minutes in length. In order to adhere to our cleaning protocols and additional steps we are taking to keep everyone safe, we ask that you return to the building or parking lot by 10 minutes prior to the end of your child’s therapy session. Your therapist will communicate with you at the beginning or towards the end of the session when to return to the office to review activities as needed. We ask that only one parent or guardian per patient come back to the therapy room.
  • Touch-Free Billing: In order to streamline our check out process, reduce contact with staff, and reduce the overall number of patients in the office we ask that all patients have a credit card on file for billing. Please discuss the details with your therapist.
  • Loaned Equipment: We are being strict with cleaning protocols with loaned equipment that is returned. While at home with this equipment (such as lenses, prims, and flippers) please avoid using harsh chemicals. You may use soap and warm water on most of this equipment.
  • Remote Optometric Vision Training: We will be continuing Remote Optometric Vision Training on a case to case basis. If interested, please let us know.

April Showers Bring May Flowers…and (Eye) Allergies!

Eye Allergies

WHAT CAUSES EYE ALLERGIES?

  • Allergies cause your body to release histamine in response to an allergen.
  • These allergens can cause havoc to your body including your eyes.

THESE ALLERGENS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Pollens
  • Dust
  • Pet Dander
  • Mold
  • Smoke

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS OF EYE ALLERGIES?

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Tearing
  • Swelling
  • Blurred vision

HOW ARE EYE ALLERGIES TREATED?

  • Avoid allergens
  • Artificial tears
  • Allergy eye drops
  • Cold compresses
  • Oral allergy medications
  • Limited contact lens wear and/or switch to daily contact lenses

Say Good-Bye to Fogging While Wearing Your Mask & Glasses!

Stop Fogging

Here are some tips to reduce or prevent fogging of your glasses while wearing a mask:

IMPROVE THE FIT OF YOUR MASK

  • By adjusting how snug the mask is against your nose and cheeks, you can prevent air from escaping through the top of your mask.
  • Try adjusting the ear loops or adjusting the ties to tighten the mask.
  • Consider decreasing the size of your mask if possible.

MOLD YOUR MASK TO YOUR NOSE

  • Adjust the bendable metal strips to mold to your nose to reduce air flow through the top of your mask.
  • If you are using a homemade mask or a mask that does not have a bendable metal strip consider adding a piper cleaner or metal twist tie to create a similar effect.
  • Use your glasses to make a similar effect – If possible, pull your mask up and have your glasses sit on the top your mask to hold it against your nose/across your bridge better. The weight of your glasses can help to block air flow out the top of your mask.

WASH YOUR GLASSES

  • Use lotion-free, non-citrus based dish soap and warm water to clean your glasses, and allow the glasses to completely dry before using. The ingredients of dish soap can leave behind a thin film that can help prevent fogging.

TAPE YOUR MASK

  • Use medical grade or athletic adhesive to tape your mask across the bridge of your nose and across the top of your cheeks.
  • Be wary of the type of tape you use (avoid duct tape!), as tape can be harsh on your skin.
  • First, test a small portion of tape against your skin to confirm you do not develop any allergic reactions before using with your mask.

ADD TISSUE

  • Place a small piece of folded tissue under your mask at the bridge of the nose. This tissue can act as a sponge and absorb the moisture from your breath rather than the moisture fogging your glasses.

USE COMMERICAL ANTI-FOG PRODCUTS

  • Make sure to read the instructions for proper use as each product is different.
  • Read the fine print as some anti-fog products (wipes, spray, pastes) cause damage to lens coatings (like anti-glare coating). If you are unsure if the product you have will cause damage please call our optical to confirm!
  • Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, PC is excited to support “FOG STOPPER.” This awesome commercial anti-fog product is great for your glasses (safety eyewear, swim googles, sports googles, etc) without causing damage to coatings on your glasses. Ask our staff what they think as most are using it themselves and visit our optical to get your own bottle.

DON’T ADD SPIT OR UTILIZE OTHER HOME REMEDIES

  • Spitting on your lenses has been greatly suggested as it is a trick that often works for goggles for swimmers and scuba divers, but please avoid doing this as we want to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Avoid trying home remedies such as shaving cream, baby shampoo, vinegar, and toothpaste, as such products can cause damage to lens coatings and often the required amount to prevent fogging may leave the lenses/your vision blurry.

WEAR CONTACT LENSES

  • If these tips do not seem to work for you or last long enough, and you have a prescription for contact lenses, use your contacts! Remember that at this time there is currently no scientific evidence of an added risk for contracting COVID-19 when wearing contact lenses. Contact lenses are safe. During this trying time and with changes in social distancing and stay at home orders, the weight of the struggle has been great on small businesses.

Local and small business are the bedrock of our communities; together let’s rally to support these businesses during this troubling time. One very important thing you can do for small businesses is to understand the hard decisions these small business owners have to make at this time. Hard decisions can include having to close, reducing open hours, or laying off employees that are more like family.

Let’s take the time to help small businesses get back on their feet and even grow.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS NOW?!

    • Schedule appointments and book services from local business for future dates
  • AMPLIFY YOUR SUPPORT:

    • The cost of supporting a small business by following, liking, sharing, or commenting on their social media is $0.00, yet it can make all the difference
    • Give your favorite small business’s a kind review, a shout-out on social media, or cheer them on through word-of-mouth
    • Check in with your family and friends that are small business owners and employees to offer personal support and encouragement. Remind them that they are not alone and that we can all work through this together
  • EXPRESS UNDERSTANDING:

    • This time is difficult for all and the weight is especially heavy on small business owners and employees as they see their passion struggle. Please help by understanding and respecting the hard decisions!

The Do’s & Don’ts of Cleaning Your Contact Lenses & Cases

These recommendations are made by the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), American Optometric Association (AOA), British Contact Lenses Association (BCLA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE), Contact Lens Institute (CLI), Gas Permeable Lens Institute (GPLI) and many more.

As determined by these organizations, there currently is no scientific evidence that supports contact lens wearers are at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 compared to glasses wearers.

THE DO’S

DO: WASH YOUR HANDS

  • Wash your hand before handling contact lenses, inserting contact lenses, and removing contact lenses
  • Thoroughly wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
  • Thoroughly dry your hands with an unused towel after washing your hands
  • Even when not putting contact lenses in or taking contact lenses out, regularly wash your hands. Wash hands especially after being in a public place

DO: REPLACE LENS CASES

  • Replace cases at least once a month
  • Each day rinse, wipe dry, and air-dry contact lenses cases
  • Proper cleaning and replace reduces the risk of contamination and infection
  • Case care is just as important as the care of the contact lenses themselves

DO: AVOID WATER

  • Do not use water to clean or rinse contact lenses
  • Minimize contact with water – avoid using while swimming, hot tubs, and showering

DO: USE DAILY DISPOSABLES

  • If possible, use daily disposables
  • The proteins, lipids, calcium, and other substances that occur naturally in your tears create small deposits and build up on reusable lenses over time. In addition, airborne allergens and debris may cause build up, making it all the more important to clean lenses thoroughly and replace them more frequently.
  • For hard/rigid contact lenses, make sure to rub and rinse well with prescribed multi-purpose solution to avoid build-up

THE DONT’S

DON’T: RE-USE OR TOP-OFF WITH SOLUTIONS

  • Uses solutions appropriately
  • Do not reuse old solution to store used lenses
  • Keep contact lens solution in the original container, do not switch solutions to smaller containers like travel-sized bottles as this does not maintain hygienic precautions

DON’T: SLEEP IN YOUR CONTACT LENSES

  • Sleeping in contact lenses increases that chance of an eye infection by 6 to 8 times

DON’T: WEAR CONTACT LENSES WHEN ILL

  • To prevent contact lens infections, avoid using contact lenses when ill, discontinue wear when feeling cold or flu-like symptoms

DON’T: OVER-WEAR

  • Replace lenses as prescribed – replace daily, every two-weeks, or monthly

It is important that no matter your specific eyewear needs – glasses, contact lenses, or no correction at all – you must avoid touching your eyes, eyelids, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. If you are taking the proper precautions, there is currently no scientific evidence of an added risk for contracting COVID-19 when wearing contact lenses.

The Do’s & Don’ts of Cleaning Your Glasses

THE DO’S

DO: START WITH FRAMES FIRST

  • Start with cleaning your frames first, prior to cleaning the lenses, to avoid smudges on the lenses
  • It is important to clean away facial oil on the temples, bridge, and nose pads to avoid build up
  • Don’t forget to clean the area where the frames meet the lenses as dust, debris, and facial oils tend to build up in this area

DO: USE LENS CLEANER OR DISH SOAP

  • Uses lens cleaner when available
  • Otherwise use lotion-free, non-citrus based dish soap. Only use a tiny amount of dish soap as most soaps are highly concentrated. Use warm water with the dish soap
  • Dish soap can be used to clean the lenses and frames
  • After, dry with a clean microfiber and/or lint-free cloth

DO: GENTLE MASSAGE

  • Gently rub/massage all parts of the frame and both sides of the lenses

DO: DO IT DAILY

  • Cleaning your eyewear daily is a healthy habit (especially during this time of COVID-19)

DON’T: USE HARSH CHEMICALS

  • Chemicals like vinegar or ammonia, or those found in window cleaner and toothpaste, often causes damage to the coatings on lenses and frames

DON’T: USE YOUR CLOTHING

  • Small debris, dust, and other particles that collect on shirts, scarves, and tissues/paper towels can lead to unwanted scratches on lenses and lens coatings

DON’T: USE SPIT

  • Avoid using your spit or your breath, even as a quick fix, as it is not effective and not hygienic

It is important that no matter your specific eyewear needs – glasses, contact lenses, or no correction at all – you must avoid touching your eyes, eyelids, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. If you are taking the proper precautions, there is currently no scientific evidence of an added risk for contracting COVID-19 when comparing glasses wear vs. contact lens wear.

Top 5 Tips for Visual Hygiene, Efficiency, & Relaxation

Are you among the many that have increased your screen time as you are now working from home? Are your children spending more time on a screen as they complete school work at home? Is your family taking advantage of this time at home to watch movies, catch up on your favorite tv shows, or entertain yourselves with digital device games?

If you have said yes to any or all of these, you are most likely experiencing more eye strain, fatigue, dryness, headaches, blurred vision, and neck/shoulder pain. Prolonged screen time on digital devices (computers, tablets, e-readers, cell phones, etc) is associated with many of these visual symptoms.

We are here to help! Review our five easy to remember and easy to initiate tips for visual success with digital devices!

TOP 5 TIPS for VISUAL HYIGENE, EFFICIENCY, & RELAXATION

  1. SET-UP FOR SUCCESS:  Start off your work or school day successfully by implementing simple improvements to your workspace set-up.
    • POSTURE – Sit up straight through your back and neck. With proper posture you allow both of your eyes an equal chance to take in information and see your space. Proper posture improves alertness, concentration, comfort, and circulation.
    • WORKING DISTANCE – Maintain an optimal visual working distance from your reading material. To obtain this distance, simply place your closed fist against your chin and place your reading material at the tip of your elbow. This distance is known as The Harmon Distance.
    • REMEMBER TO TILT – Tilt paperwork to 20 degrees towards you to allow for the best visual ergonomics. A slant board or 3-ring binder can provide the necessary 20-degree tilt.
    • ADEQUATE LIGHTING – Try to have ambient lighting for all activities. Natural light is the best, however not always possible. If natural light is not available, try to reduce shiny surfaces, glare, and fluorescent lighting as best as possible.
  1. TAKE BREAKSTHINK 20/20/20:  Every 20 minutes of near work, look 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds. Tips to help include:
    • Setting a timer for 20 minutes
    • Use Google Chrome extension “eyeCare – Protect your vision
    • Set short term goals that you can accomplish, then take a break
    • When reading, place a bookmark a few pages ahead and take a break when you make it to your bookmark.

  1. KEEP BLINKING:  During sustained near work on a digital device, our blink rate goes down by about half! Take blink breaks and consider using over-the-counter artificial tears to reduce dryness and improve comfort. Use the artificial tears as directed by your optometrist, if you have questions on how to use artificial tears properly or which to use, please contact us directly.
  1. PRESCRIBED GLASSES:  If you have been prescribed glasses for computer, reading, or near work, make sure you are wearing them! This can improve visual focus and reduce added strain. Blue blocking glasses may be an option for you, contact us directly to discuss the benefit of this technology and if it may be right for you. If you are a current/past vision therapy patient that has been prescribed syntonic googles, proper and consistent use is of high priority in order to reduce symptoms and improve stamina.
  1. SPEND TIME OUTDOORS:  Being in an open space and looking at a distance helps to relax the eyes. Engage in simple activities that we may have forgotten are possible like taking a walk, relaxing on the patio/porch, or play movement-oriented games such as hopscotch, tag, catch, and Simon Says.

Now more than ever we are on our digital devices out of necessity for work, online school, and entertainment. This increased demand on our visual system is one of the many reasons that it is so important to continue to address and recognize visual symptoms and strain. Hello!  Welcome to the Hellerstein and Brenner Vision Center, PC blog!

This is a difficult time in the world for many of you and for our practice.  However, we do not want this required isolation to truly separate us from what we love to do, which is taking care of our patients. We are learning now, more than ever, that we are stronger together. One of the silver-linings of this crisis is that we have been granted the gift of time; time to connect with our family, friends, and of course our patients in a completely different way than before. This is an opportunity to bring life back to our Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, PC blog and also to reach and re-connect with so many of you. This is our chance to share knowledge, brainstorm ideas, and especially to discuss how vision truly extends beyond 20/20.

Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, P.C. is a full scope optometric practice and optical that specializes in many areas of the optometry field. Our comprehensive eye examinations are centered on the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, functional glasses prescriptions, specialty contact lenses, and vision therapy. We specialize in developmental or behavioral optometry. This means we are able to identify binocular vision and visual processing conditions and offer treatment options for optimal visual function.

Our vision is crucial to our work, academics, athletics, and activities of daily life. For that reason, we are dedicated to making sure your visual system is working optimally and comfortably to meet all of your visual demands.

We offer vision therapy and visual rehabilitation, which may be the preferred treatment of choice for long-standing visual difficulties.  We can do this successfully through non-invasive treatment for binocular vision conditions such as: difficulty with eye teaming, poor depth perception, learning-related vision disorders, poor visual tracking or coordination, and more.  In addition, vision therapy is often prescribed to manage visual symptoms resulting from concussion or traumatic brain injury. Finally, athletes may also enhance their visual skills with our sports vision training program.
